University of Toronto fencer Ben Mucsi and track & field middle-distance runner Lucia Stafford have been named the Varsity Blues athletes of the week for the period ending February 2.
Â
A fourth-year from Toronto, Ont., Ben Mucsi won the Desjarlais Trophy as the individual epee champion at this past weekend's OUA championship. Mucsi overcame an ankle injury to edge out Brock's Logan Wilford 15-12 in the final.
The engineering major also won OUA gold in the epee team relay as the Blues saw past the Queen's Gaels squad. His contribution to the team relay helped Toronto win their fifth consecutive OUA title.
Lucia Stafford, a fourth-year engineering major also from Toronto, Ont., had a record-breaking weekend, as she set a new Canadian U23 record for the women's indoor 1500m at Boston U's Bruce Lehande Scarlet and White Invitational.
She finished third overall in the race, with a time of 4:10.22.
Stafford will look to continue her fine form this weekend in Brockport, N.Y, where the Blues will participate in the Brockport Multi.
An honorable mention goes to Wrestling's Rachel Zack. The second-year international relations major from Toronto, Ont. won the individual silver medal at this weekend's OUA championship, qualifying her for the U SPORTS national championship in St. Catherines, Ont.
