The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's curling team placed fourth overall at the 2020 OUA curling championships, February 13-17, in Guelph, Ont.
Â
The Blues went 5-2 through round robin action to finish second in their pool. Toronto opened the championships with a narrow 4-3 loss to Brock, but went onto defeat Windsor 11-0, Trent 6-2, McMaster 4-3 and Western 8-4. U of T then dropped a 6-5 decision to the Waterloo Warriors but wrapped up pool play with a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Queen's Gaels.
Â
That set up an OUA quarter-final matchup with the Lakehead Thunderwolves, who finished third in their pool with a 4-3 record. The Blues dominated, winning 6-2 to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2017.
Â
The Blues came up just short on Monday, falling 8-6 to the Brock Badgers in the semifinals and 8-4 to the Guelph Gryphons in the bronze-medal match.
Â
"It was a great run," said Varsity Blues head coach John Rudd. "The guys raised their game to a level far above anything this year. They beat two of the favourites in McMaster and Queen's in round robin play. In general, time and time again they demonstrated excellent technical skills, strong mental toughness and impressive team dynamics. All in all, it was an excellent event for the team."
