The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's curling teams travel to Guelph, Ont., to compete in the 2020 OUA championships from February 13-17 at the Guelph Curing Club.
Â
The event will open with pool play from Thursday, February 13 through Sunday, February 16 with the quarter-final matches to follow, taking place Sunday evening. The semi-finals will kick-off Monday morning (Feb 17) with the championship matches taking place Monday afternoon.
Â
WOMEN'S PREVIEW: The Blues did not lose any members from last season's team. Third-year standout Mackenzie Kiemele is back at skip, while fellow third-year standout Madeleine Spurgeon is back as the lead. Sophomores Thea Coburn and Kelsey Chisamore-Johnson return as U of T's second and vice, respectively.
Â
At last year's OUA championships, the Toronto women finished with a perfect 7-0 record in pool play but lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual OUA silver medalist Laurentian Voyageurs. The team will look to build on that experience as they vie for the podium this year.
Â
MEN'S PREVIEW: The Blues men gained some experience with third-year skip Justin Chung joining the roster. The returning roster made some positional changes from last year, as fifth-year Jacob Weber takes over the lead position, third-year Sebastian Gajewski is now slotted in as a second and sophomore Joshua Leung is the vice.
Â
The Toronto men hope to build on their experience from last season and will look to their veteran presence to take them to the next level at these championships.
Â
The top three men's and women's teams will advance to the 2020 U SPORTS / Curling Canada championships, March 11-15, in Portage la Prairie, Man.
