BLUES FINISH HOME TOURNEY WITH PAIR OF WINS

The Varsity Blues women's water polo rolled to two more convincing wins to wind up 5-0 at the seventh annual U of T Fall Classic.

"With the exception of a half quarter today, I thought the team showed more consistency in its play," stated head coach George Gross, Jr.  "This is crucial to the development of the team as a whole and the players individually."

After scoring 15 goals in each of its first three games, the Blues found another level of offence.

Blues 19, Carleton 3

After jumping out to a quick 3-0 first quarter lead, the Blues imploded in the final half of the quarter missing a penalty shot and turning the ball over three times and giving up two goals against the Ravens.  The Blues focused on their own end in the second quarter and scored the only three goals of the frame to lead 6-2 at the half.

A 4-0 run to begin the third quarter was the second part to a string of seven unanswered goals and the Blues poured in six goals total to take a commanding 12-3 heading into the fourth period.

Freshman Lauren Dundee (Perth, Scotland), feeling much more comfortable with the Blues system, found her scoring touch to lead all scorers with five markers, while fellow rookie Kaitlyn Palmer (Ottawa) notched her third consecutive hat trick.

Sophomore Allie Vas (Yorba Linda, California), Sara Sutherland (Regina) and Sarah Wentling (Mohnton, Pennsylvania) each scored twice.  Senior co-captain Rhianna Wood (Calgary), juniors Caitlyn Tiedje (Okotoks, Alberta) and Masa Stojanovic (Toronto) and sophomores Deena Charles (Langley, B.C.) and Katie Smith (Chestermere, Alberta) both scored  once.

Blues 20, Ottawa  4

The fifth and final game of the home stand saw the Blues face off against an Ottawa club team composed primarily of members of last year's National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) silver medalist Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The game began tentatively with each team scoring a goal before the Blues popped in a pair to lead 3-1 at the end of the initial quarter.  Toronto extended its lead with four unanswered second quarter goals to go ahead 7-1.  A 6-0 run to start the third quarter capped off a string of 12 unanswered goals as the team went up 15-2 entering the final frame.

Vas scored a natural hat trick in the fourth quarter as part of her game-leading four goals.  Palmer, with her fourth consecutive hat trick and Sutherland scored three times apiece.  Vas and Palmer ended the weekend with 16 goals each to lead all scorers.  Smith and Wood both pumped in two goals while Charles, Dundee, Tiedje and Wentling  added singles.   Also scoring an extremely rare goal was standout senior co-captain netminder Rachel Jaffe (Irvine, California) who launched a shot from her own end as time expired at the end of the first half.

Up next for the Blues is a trip in two weeks to Montreal to face a pair of National Team training center split squads and the powerful DDO club.
