BLUES OPEN HOME TOURNEY WITH THREE WINS

The Varsity Blues women's water polo team rattled off three straight convincing wins at its home tournament, the seventh annual U of T Fall Classic.  The Blues attack rolled up 15 goals in each of the contests and the stifling defence made scoring a difficult task for their opponents..

"After a month of nothing but training, we were all excited to finally get into game action," stated senior co-captain Rachael Jaffe (Irvine, California).  " It was also really great to play games in our home pool." added senior co-captain Rhianna Wood.

"While the scores may have been favourable, the team showed the signs of early season rust with periods of letdowns," said head coach George Gross, Jr.  "That said, it was gratifying to see that the hard work the players have put in to this point showed through most of the time.  We were able to use all three of our goalies which was beneficial to the development of our backups. However, there is still much work to be done in order to pave the way for the team to reach its potential."

Blues  15,   McGill  1

The Blues started slowly and missed several glorious scoring opportunities including two penalty shots in the first three minutes of the game but then scored four times in quick succession and never looked back.  Rookie Katelyn Palmer (Ottawa) made a dramatic debut in the Blue & White, leading all scorers with four goals.

Sophomore Sarah Wentling (Mohnton, Pennsylvania) notched a hat trick, while sophomore Allie Vas (Yorba Linda, California) and rookie Lauren Dundee (Perth, Scotland) both scored twice.

Senior co-captain Rhianna Wood (Calgary), juniors Masa Stojanovic (Toronto) and Caitlyn Tiedje (Okotoks, Alberta) and sophomore Emily Grossman (Sunnyvale, California) each added singles.

Blues 15,  Queen's 6

Showing no signs of early morning tiredness, the Blues exploded for six unanswered goals before giving up a late marker in the first quarter against the visiting Queen's Gaels.  The team extended the lead to 8-1 at the half by scoring the only two goals in the second quarter.  A 5-0 run in the third quarter cemented the victory as the Blues pulled away to a 13-4 lead entering the final frame.

Tiedje led the way with four goals from the center forward slot.  Palmer and Vas provided hat tricks, while sophomore Sara Sutherland (Regina) popped in a pair of goals. Katie Smith (Chestermere, Alberta) and Deena Charles (Langley, B.C.) plus Dundee added singles.

Blues  15,  Capital Wave  1

At last year's Fall Classic, the Capital Wave club team from Ottawa split a pair of games against the Blues.  However, this time around Toronto took advantage of a few key senior-aged players who didn't make the trip from Ottawa to roll over their opponent.  The first quarter was close as the Blues got out to a 2-0 lead but couldn't generate any more quality scoring chances.

The second quarter proved to be a different story as the Blues vaunted counterattack roared out to score six unanswered goals and stake the team to a 8-0 halftime lead.   A 5-0 third quarter extended the lead to 13-0 entering the fourth quarter and the Blues held the shutout until the last minute.

Vas led all scorers with four goals, while Palmer added her second hat trick of the day.  Tiedje, Sutherland and Wentling all scored twice while Smith and Grossman added singles.
