The University of Toronto women's soccer team open up their 2019 regular season on the road, when they kick off against the RMC Paladins on Saturday, August 31 and Queen's Gaels on Sunday, September 1 in Kingston, Ont. The action starts at 1 p.m., on both days.
The Varsity Blues went 5-6-5 during the 2018 regular season and notched their first playoff victory since 2014 with a 1-0 upset win over Carleton. The Blues season came to an end following a 2-0 OUA quarter-final loss to the eventual 2018 OUA and U SPORTS champion Ottawa Gee-Gees.
In his first year as Blues bench boss, Angelo Cavalluzzo thinks his team has what it takes to reach their first OUA Final Four since 2004 this season.
"We have a strong recruiting class that has come in to supplement the strong core from last year," said Cavalluzzo. "We have high expectations for ourselves and we know we can achieve them, but to do so we need to make sure we are well organized defensively and are able to limit individual errors. The team has a strong desire to be successful this year and we will be pushing hard to make a strong playoff run this season."
With the graduation of their two leading scorers in Chelsea Cheung and Natasha Klasios, Toronto added a pair of very experienced transfers to their 2019 roster.
Jenny Wolever joins the Blues after an outstanding four-year career with the Queen's Gaels. The three-time OUA all-star and 2018 OUA East player of the year and U SPORTS all-Canadian scored 32 goals in 56 regular season matches.
Miranda Badovinac, a midfielder/forward from Burlington, Ont., comes to the Blues after two seasons with the UAlbany Great Danes of the NCAA.
The Blues also have some top returning veterans who are sure to contribute to the team's success. Maddie MacKay will look to lead the Blues in the midfield, while Daniella Cipriano and Anna Crone are expected to lead Toronto's defensive corps.
Additionally, Levanta Staggolis will be back between posts, along with Stephania Turyk, who will provide solid depth at the goalkeeper position.
