*Varsity Blues women's soccer playoff preview, presented by Lebanese Garden*
The No. 6 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team challenge the TMU Bold in an OUA playoff showdown this Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Varsity Stadium.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the Varsity Blues finished with an 8-3-1 (W-L-T) record to place third in the OUA East. A well-balanced team, Toronto finished in both the Top 5 in the province in both goals scored (29) and goals allowed (12). The Blues have used a scoring by committee approach with 10 different players registering a goal this fall. Leading the charge though has been third-year midfielders Emilija Lucic and Kimee Liu scoring seven and five goals, respectively. The strong midfield play has been critical to the success on both ends of the pitch as U of T looks to continue their dominant possession into the postseason.
Meanwhile, TMU finished sixth in the OUA east with a record of 4-5-3. The Bold will go as far as their offence can take them as they have averaged nearly two goals a game across their four wins this season. However, if the offence is not clicking it will be on the shoulders of goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci to keep TMU within striking distance. Making 10 starts and 11 appearances this fall, Paolucci ranks eighth in the province with 48 total saves.
Toronto earned the win in the lone meeting between the two teams this season, defeating TMU 2-1 in the season opener back on August 29. The Blues have been effective on home turf this season with a 5-1 record at Varsity Stadium and hold a large historical advantage over the Bold with a 24-3-7 record dating back to 2008.
