The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's curling team dropped all four games at the McMaster Bonspiel last weekend (Jan. 27-28) in Hamilton, Ont.
The Blues opened up their weekend to losses to the Laurier Golden Hawks, 7-3, and the Carleton Ravens 9-3. They came up just short to the host McMaster Marauders, 8-6, before getting edged 8-2 by McMaster Junior Varsity.
Fifth-year head coach John Rudd was pleased with his young team's growth over the weekend.
"The goals we set going into this event were primarily performance goals such as technical, mental, physical, strategic and team dynamics," said Rudd. "These are the things we can control. Winning is an outcome goal that's mostly out of our control. We focus on the things we can control."
The stats back it up. Their average shooting percentage was the highest this season at 53%. They also hit a team-high of 35% in their end with a shooting percentage of 65% or greater.
"The team showed excellent mental toughness with a never say die attitude. Our team dynamics were stronger than ever. Another event with significant upward progress. There are still things we must improve but the trend is good," Rudd explained.
