Led by a silver medal performance from second-year sabre specialist Rebecca Jeffrey, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's fencing team delivered a strong showing on the opening day of the OUA championship hosted by Queen's University on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 11).
Opening the day with a convincing 15-3 victory over McMaster and tight 15-11 and 15-9 wins over two competitors from Western, Jeffrey earned her place in the finals of the individual sabre event, where she faced off with Lily Jiang of Queen's. Dropping her fourth match of the day 15-7, the kinesiology major picked up a silver medal for the Varsity Blues in Toronto's top performance of the day.
U of T also saw two top 10 finishers in the individual women's foil event with Siobhan Drysdale placing sixth and Christina Brinkmann finishing 10th.
In the individual epee event, top Varsity Blues were Shannon Blachar and Rachel McLeod who placed 11th and 12th, respectively.
The Varsity Blues currently sit in fifth place in the overall standings.

The OUA championships continue tomorrow (Feb. 12) as the team events in all three categories will be taking place throughout the afternoon with the Varsity Blues holding the third seed in both the sabre and foil.
