The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team heads into this weekend's OUA championship (Oct. 20-22) in Kitchener, Ont., with medal aspirations.
Riding a five-match unbeaten streak, the Blue and White will face the Brock Badgers in their opening OUA quarter-final on Friday at 5 p.m. The Blues ended the season with an 8-2-3 (W-L-T) record, placing them in second in the OUA East standings. The Badgers, who the Blues defeated 12-4 in their regular season finale this past weekend, finished third in the OUA West with a 7-6 record.
Â
U of T will be a medal hopeful not only due to their late season momentum, which saw them win six of their last eight matches, but also because of the veteran-laden roster which sees 10 players in their fourth-year or higher.
Â
Leading the way for the Blues up front is the dynamic fifth-year scoring duo of Sarah Jamieson and Melissa Holland. Both have received OUA all-star honours in previous seasons and both have played a significant role in the Blues attack this season, with Jamieson scoring a team-high 33 goals and Holland second on the team with 26. Â
Â
Assisting the pair of dominant Blues scorers from the midfield will be Sarah Morgan and Geneva Calder. A second-year midfielder, Morgan led the team in assists this season, tallying 15 helpers alongside 18 goals. Meanwhile Calder, who also serves as the Blues faceoff specialist, provides strong transition play, notching 11 assists and 19 goals.
Â
Defensively, third-year goalkeeper Daniela Solomon has been a constant for U of T in net all season long, with the steady guidance of June Shiraishi and the speed and hustle of Marie Mutware providing a strong back line for the Blues.
