The Varsity Blue's women's lacrosse team defeated the Western Mustangs 9-8 in what was a tight battle on Saturday, September 24 at Varsity Stadium.

The win improves Toronto to 5-0 and marks their first win over Western since 2009.

Toronto came out strong and got on the score sheet first against the five-time reigning OUA champions with a goal from Etobicoke, Ont. native Sarah Jamieson in the first minute of the game

The Mustangs seemed to find their groove though and caught up to the Blues late in the first half with both teams tied 5-5 at the half.

Middie Geneva Calder scored a great equalizer in the second by dancing around the opponents defence and driving the ball past the goal line.

The rest of the second half was a tight back-and-forth battle between the well-matched teams, with the Blues ending up ahead as Jamieson notched the eventual game-winner with 1:21 remaining.

U of T's defence played a strong game the entire night and goalie Daniela Solomon made some spectacular saves to keep the goals against at a minimum.

Jamison and Calder led the team with three goals each. Laurel McGillis scored two goals and Alex Walton scored one.

The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow (Sept. 24) when they take on the Queen's Gaels and UOIT Ridgebacks at York University. The games start at 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
