The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with the visiting Ryerson Rams Sunday (Sept. 18) afternoon at Varsity Stadium.
Pressuring the Rams in the early going, the Varsity Blues seemed prime to jump out to an early lead.
However, Ryerson was able to weather the storm and respond late in the first half with a goal called back due to an offside call in the 37th minute and a hard shot from the wing testing Toronto fifth-year goalkeeper Tori Edgar in the 41st minute.
The 0-0 stalemate was maintained to the halftime break.
As the second half opened, both teams exchanged great opportunities with the Rams unable to capitalize on Edgar out of her net during a scramble while Blues leading scorer Natasha Klasios was denied on a corner kick finish by Ryerson keeper Elisa Lapadula.
The greatest chances for Toronto then came in the 70th minute as Klasios scrambled to beat Lapadula to a through ball before setting up third-year striker Alexandra Rocha in the middle with the keeper out of the net and only Ryerson defenders in front of her, but Rocha found the left upright.
And in the 84th minute Klasios sent in a long strike from beyond the 18-yard box that beat the Rams keeper but not the crossbar.
Edgar finished the match with three saves while Lapadula earned two for Ryerson.
The Varsity Blues will now hit the road as they get set for a doubleheader in Kingston, Ontario taking on the RMC Paladins Saturday, September 24 and Queen's Gaels Sunday, September 25. Both contests kick off at 1 p.m.
