The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team defeated the Queen's Gaels 13-10 and UOIT Ridgebacks 19-2 on Sunday, September 18 in Oshawa, Ont.
Â
With the wins, the Blues improve to 4-0 and sit atop the OUA standings after two weeks of action.
Â
Toronto and Queen's were tied 4-4 at halftime but a strong second half secured their third win of the season.
Â
"We came out strong and composed with three quick goals in the second half and never looked back," said Jeska Eedens, who is in her first season as Varsity Blues head coach. "The defence really stepped up and kept us in it until we started hitting our shots and Daniela Solomon had a very strong game in net, stopping some point blank shots. Our midfield was where the game was really won, causing turnovers, winning balls, and transitioning quickly."
Â
Laura McGill led the Blues with four goals, while Sarah Jamieson notched three in the victory. Melissa Holland and Zoe Chad each tallied two goals, with Geneva Calder and Sarah Morgan adding single markers in the win.
Â
U of T went onto dominate the host Ridgebacks 19-2. Alex Walton led the Blues with four goals, with Jamieson and Calder adding three each. Holland, Morgan and McGillis scored two apiece and single tallies were registered by Chad, Corinne Bertoia and Lynn Li.
Â
The Varsity Blues will face the Gaels and Ridgebacks again next Sunday, September 25 when they travel to York University. Game times are 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., respectively.
