The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's curling teams will vie for the podium as they head to the OUA championships this weekend (Feb 11-14) held at the Guelph Curling Club.
Last season, the men's squad qualified for the CIS championship after capturing a bronze medal in Guelph and this season they are looking to vault back to their 2014 form, where they lifted the coveted provincial championship banner for the fifth time in school history.
Led by fourth-year skip Richard Seto and fourth-year vice Geoffrey Elliott, the Blues will have all the tools in place to make a run in the seven-match tournament. Joining the veteran duo will be second-year second Connor Rooney and first-year lead Jacob Weber.
For the women, they will be looking to capture the second OUA championship banner in U of T history, with the last coming in 2001.
With 2014 CIS all-Canadian and fourth-year vice Deanna Caldwell and second-year skip Deborah Hawkshaw leading the way, the Blues will enter the tournament riding a wave of momentum. Toronto had a terrific showing at the Brock Invitational, where the team finished 3-1 with victories over Waterloo, Western and Trent. Joining the veteran vice and young skip will be second-year second Sabrina Ribau, third-year lead Julie Thompson, and alternates Hilary Hager and Caitlin Elliott.
The women will kick things off Thursday, February 11 at 8:30 a.m. against the McMaster Marauders followed by the men at 1:30 p.m. versus McMaster as well.
