SABRE FINDS THE PODIUM AT BROCK OPEN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fencing team travelled to St. Catharines, Ont., for the 2016 Brock Open this past weekend (Nov. 19-20).

It's the most widely attended tournament of the year and it was the Blues sabre fencers showing strength and leading the way.  William Kinney, a third-year kinesiology student, medaled for the second tournament in a row, securing the bronze medal in the senior men's sabre division.

Kinney, a favorite to medal, was knocked out in the semifinal round by national rival and eventual gold medalist, Philip Pitura of Saskatchewan.

"It was great to see Kinney reset to his medal-winning ways," said Varsity Blues head coach Thomas Nguyen. "He's starting to consolidate his game at a higher level, which should bode well for the second half of the season."

Rebecca Jeffrey, a second-year kinesiology student, secured the silver medal in U20 women's sabre and first-year forensic science major Filbert Yung won the bronze medal in U20 men's sabre.

"I'm delighted to see both Jeffrey and Yung medal in the U20 age categories, they did great!" said Varsity Blues team manager Fidelia Ho. "Kinney, Jeffrey, and Yung are all former University of Toronto Junior Blues fencers.  It's clear that our investments in that program are paying competitive dividends."
