BLUES FACE NEW CHALLENGERS AT QUEEN'S INVITATIONAL

Competing at the Queen's Invitational this past weekend (Oct. 29-30), the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's water polo team faced a host of new challengers featuring talent from the Canadian senior and junior national teams.

First the Blues challenged the UQAM water polo club. Following a tentative start which saw the Blues fall behind 5-1 after one quarter of play Toronto shook off the early jitters and began to find the back of the net entering the final period trailing 10-5. However, U of T were shutout in the final frame dropping a 15-5 decision. Fourth-year co-captain Ana Miroslavic and first-year Cam Greer each scored twice with second-year Emily Kelvin-Davies adding the other marker.

Just a few hours later, the Blues were at it again, this time against the UdeM water polo club. Toronto shocked their opponents early by surging out to a quick 3-0 lead. The game see-sawed back-and-forth after with the Blues keeping it closed before UdeM outscored them 3-1 in the final quarter to win 8-6. Second-year Megan MacCormac and first-year Rhianna Wood paced the Blues with a pair of goals each. Fourth-year co-captain Marianne Tout and Miroslavic added singles.

Early the next morning, the already exhausted Blues continued tournament play against the McGill water polo club and came out on the short end of a 10-3 score. Miroslavic, Tout and MacCormac provided the scoring for U of T.

Then to conclude the weekend the Blues jumped back in the pool to face the Concordia water polo club. Competing in their fourth match in 21 hours the Blues fought hard throughout the game but fell 9-1. Third-year Ali Kraft notched the lone tally for Toronto.

The Varsity Blues will now compete in a home-and-home series with the McMaster Marauders beginning in Hamilton, Ontario on Tuesday, November 8 before returning to Varsity Pool on Friday, November 11.
