DRAW WITH NO. 8 GEE-GEES PROPELS BLUES TO PLAYOFFS

Box Score After clinching a playoff position in a win over the Carleton Ravens yesterday, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team continued their late season push drawing 2-2 with the No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23) at Varsity Stadium.

With the draw U of T finishes the regular season in sixth-place with a 7-7-2 (W-L-D) record and will face the Gee-Gees in the first round of the OUA playoffs on Wednesday, October 26.

On Sunday, the Blues came out fast as U of T leading goal scorer Natasha Klasios found space in the box for a shot that challenged Gee-Gees goalkeeper Margot Shore who made the initial save, however, in the ensuing scramble fourth-year midifielder Nicki Parkes jumped on the scoring opportunity to put the Blues ahead 1-0 just three minutes into the contest.

Ottawa responded in the 35th minute as Morgan McNeil was able to catch Toronto goalkeeper Tori Edgar off-guard with a long strike to even the score.

Then just before half in a repeat from the day before Chelsea Cheung found space for her second goal in as many days. With Alyssa Golin streaking down the right side the midfielder delivered a perfect cross to Cheung who scored on a beautiful header to put the Blues up 2-1.

After the break, back-and-forth action ensued and it was the Varsity Blues who slipped up as a dangerous cross from McNeil found the foot of a Toronto defender who misplayed the ball for an own-goal making it a 2-2 game in the 46th minute.

From there the remainder of the second half saw an exchange of scoring opportunities including a huge save from Edgar on Gee-Gees midefiedler Kayla Da Costa-Pacheco in the 85th minute to save the draw for the Blues as neither side could find the game-winner.

Edgar finished the day with three saves while Shore and Rosa Bouchard-Geurin split time in net for the Gee-Gees with Shore picking up one save.
