VAKALIS CROWNED CANADIAN CHAMPION

University of Toronto Varsity Blues student-athlete Donna Vakalis successfully defended her national title at the 2015 Canadian Modern Pentathlon championships, August 15-16, in Kitchener-Waterloo and Baden, Ont.

28 athletes from British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Ontario and the USA competed in the sport consisting of 5 elements:  epee fencing, freestyle swimming, equestrian show jumping and the combined run-laser shoot.

Vakalis solidified her second straight Olympic berth with a solid fourth-place finish at the 2015 Pan Am Games last month. She defended her national title after posting the fastest combined run-laser shoot effort for the day.

Vakalis has done it all during her time at the University of Toronto. After completing an undergraduate degree at McMaster, Vakalis completed her Master's in architecture at U of T and is now pursuing her PhD in civil engineering.

During her time with the Varsity Blues, Vakalis earned OUA fencing all-star honours this past season. She has also competed on the cross country and track and field squads, while training with U of T's swimming program.
