WOMEN'S SQUASH 2ND AT OUA CHAMPIONSHIP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's squash team earned the silver medal at the 2015 OUA championship, January 30 - February 1, at the University of Waterloo.

The Blues finished with 25 points, just two points behind the champion Queen's Gaels. Western placed third with 20 points.

Earlier in the season, the Blues had lost to both Queens and Western and went into the championship knowing that only a much-improved performance would challenge for the OUA banner. The team was boosted by the return of 2013-14 OUA gold medalist Kathryn Milligan and 2013-14 OUA rookie of the year Pooga Chugh.

Match 1 vs McMaster
The Blues got off to a flying start winning all six matches without dropping a game.

Match 2 vs Queen's
This was always going to be the pivotal match of the weekend. In the end Queen's won the match 4-2 with three of the matches going to five games.
In the No. 5 match, Pooja Chugh came back from 0-2 to level the match at 2-2 and 9-9 on points before going down 9-11 in a fiercely competitive fifth game. Natalia Londono at No. 2 swapped games to reach 2-2 but fell short in the fifth. In the No. 1 spot, Evelyn Moorhouse built up a 2-0 lead but could not win the crucial third game and went down 3-2. Both Kathryn Milligan and Jen Klein won their No. 3 and 4 matches comfortably 3-0.

Match 3 vs Waterloo & Match 4 vs Brock
Both matches proved to be easy wins as the Blues closed out the day with a 3-1 record, in second place behind Queen's.

Match 5 vs Western
Before starting the match the Blues knew that the gold medal was out of their reach but still had to beat a confident Western team to win the silver medal. Players knew that as long as they won three matches, then second place was theirs. It was clear that knowing this added extra pressure as the Blues fought to reach their goal.

In the No. 6 spot, Alexis Twiddy put up a great fight to come back from 0-2 to be within one point of tying the match, but lost the fourth game 11-13.

Toronto's lead over Western was now down to just one point with five matches remaining. The nerves were eased slightly when Pooja Chugh won her No. 5 match 3-0.

The anxiety remained as both No. 4 Jen Klein and No. 3 Kathryn Milligan were struggling initially in their matches. Milligan came back from 0-2 to close out her match 3-2 and Klein came back from 0-1 to get the crucial third win 3-1. For the second year running, Jen Klein had won the match that secured the Blues gold in 2014 and now silver in 2015.

In the No. 2 position, Natalia Londono was also 0-2 down but fought her way back to win 3-2. This left No. 1 Evelyn Moorhouse to secure a 5-1 victory over Western with another close five-game match. This time it was Moorhouse that led 2-0 before her opponent got back to 2-2. Moorhouse regained the momentum to win the fifth game 11-2 and with it second place in the OUA individual competition.

Blues players were involved in 6-of-12 matches that went to five games, winning three versus Western and losing three versus Queen's. This was by far the closest and most intense OUA women's championship there has been for many years. The level of play and effort was amazing and a great showcase for women's varsity squash.

The Blues still have four more important tournaments before the season closes at the end of March. This weekend the team heads to Montreal to play Queen's and McGill in the Jester's University League with a play off spot in contention for the Jester's Finals at NSA on Saturday February 28.

The following week, March 6-8, the Blues will co-host and play in the 2015 Black Knight University and College Championship at the Executive Fitness and Squash Club in Concord, Ontario.
