The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team defeated the No. 2 Queen's Gaels 2-1 on Sunday, September 22 at West Campus Field in Kingston, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-2-1 and jump into second place in the OUA East division, while the Gaels drop to 4-1-3 and sit one point behind U of T in third.
Fourth-year striker and team co-captain Aisha Lewis of Mississauga, Ont., got the Blues on the board as she scored off a rebound in the 24th minute.
Rookie midfielder Nicki Parkes (Sarnia, Ont.) extended Toronto's lead with the eventual game-winner in the 37th minute, booting the ball from the top of the box with her left foot.
Gaels rookie midfielder Rachel Radu (Ottawa) scored just one minute later, snapping Toronto goalkeeper Sara Petrucci's shut out streak at 487 minutes. The Blues hadn't allowed a goal since falling to the No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens on opening weekend.
Petrucci (Bolton) made 8 saves, including four in the second half, in Toronto's fourth-straight victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Wednesday night as they head to Peterborough, Ont., to take on the Trent Excalibur. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The University of Toronto is the proud host of the 2013 CIS women's soccer championship, November 7-10, at Varsity Centre.
