Three different first-year University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer players scored in a 3-0 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 15) at Varsity Centre.
The win extends U of T's undefeated and shut out streak to four games as they improve to 3-2-1, while Ryerson drops to 1-4-0 on the season.
The Blues put the pressure on early and it looked as though Claudia Piazza (Brampton, Ont.) would open the scoring in the 10th minute as she had a point blank shot on net, but Ryerson goalkeeper Rebecca Petrocelli (Woodbridge, Ont.) was there to make the save.
First-year defender and Vancouver native Christine Mulligan got the Blues on the board in the 24th minute when she headed a Diana Esteireiro (Etobicoke, Ont.) corner kick over Petrocelli's head and into the net.
Rookie midfielder Alyssa Golin (Mississauga) put the Blues up by two in the 44th minute as she found herself all alone on Petrocelli and deked around the rookie goalkeeper to find the back of the net.
The Blues continued to pressure through the second half, with numerous chances to score. First-year striker Alexandra Rocha (Brampton) added an insurance marker in the 79th minute when she chipped the ball into the top right corner of the net.
The Blues out shot the Rams 11-0 and third-year goalkeeper Sara Petrucci (Bolton) earned the shutout in net.
The Varsity Blues start a six-game road schedule this Saturday, September 21 as they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the RMC Paladins. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
The University of Toronto is the proud host of the 2013 CIS women's soccer championship, November 7-10, at Varsity Centre.
