The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team notched their first win of the season, defeating the RMC Paladins 4-0 in their 2012 home opener on Saturday, September 8 at Varsity Centre.
Fourth-year defender Diana Esteireiro (Etobicoke, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, catching the RMC Paladins off guard with a free kick into the back of the net. Toronto held the 1-0 lead at the half.
Team co-captain Lisa English of Scarborough, Ont., put the Blues up 2-0 early in the second half when she jumped on a rebound off an Esteireiro corner kick in the eight-yard box. Rookie striker LaShaunna Harper (Toronto) added her second goal of the season just six minutes later, riffling the ball into the top right corner of the net.
Vancouver native Hattie Daumann rounded out the scoring after receiving a beautiful through ball from Esteireiro and shooting the ball past RMC veteran goalkeeper Olivia Clarke.
The Varsity Blues return to the field tomorrow afternoon as they host the CIS defending champion Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Centre. The game will be streamed live on SSN Canada, starting at 1 p.m.
