NO. 1 GEE-GEES GET PAST BLUES

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team fell 3-1 to the top-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, September 29 at Varsity Centre.

With the loss, the Varsity Blues (5-2-2) remain tied for third place in the OUA East standings, while Ottawa’s (9-0-1) win, keeps the first-place Gee-Gee’s undefeated.

Toronto started with a strong offensive effort, keeping the ball in Ottawa’s end for much of the first half.

The Blues struck first on a free kick by Diana Estieriero (Etobicoke, Ont.) in the 23rd minute.  Esteireiro’s tally marked the first goal that Ottawa has allowed in the 2012 season.

The Gee-Gees responded five minutes later on a goal scored by Pilar Khoury (Ottawa), tying the game at one apiece.

The second half saw Toronto unable to score despite multiple attempts by the team’s offence. Ottawa’s offensive production continued in the second half with goals scored by Elisabeth Wong (Ottawa) in the 47th minute and Gillian Baggot (Ottawa) in the 62nd minute.

Strong play by Blues goalkeeper Sara Petrucci (Bolton, Ont.) helped keep the score close for the Blues in the second half, but Toronto was unable to solve second-year keeper Cynthia Leblanc again.

The Gee-Gees outshot the Blues 12-6 in the match, with Petrucci posting eight saves in the loss.

The Blues take to the field tomorrow, on Sunday, September 30, against the Carleton Ravens at Varsity Centre. The game will be streamed live on SSN Canada, starting at 1 pm.
