BLUES TAME RIVAL RAMS

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team came away with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday, September 23 at Birchmount Stadium.

With the win, the Blues stand alone in second place with a 5-1-2 record, while the Ryerson Rams drop to 1-6-1, placing them tied for seventh in the OUA East division.

The Blues opened the scoring in the first half when fourth-year defender Diana Esteireiro (Etobicoke, Ont.) capitalized on a penalty kick in the 21st minute.

Ryerson was quick to rally as Barrie, Ont., native Erica Huculak beat Blues goalkeeper Sara Petrucci (Bolton, Ont.) in the 35th minute, for what would be Ryerson’s only goal of the game.

Just five minutes later, fourth-year striker Jessica Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) was able to put in the game winning goal, earning Toronto its fifth victory of the season.

Petrucci put up another impressive outing, with four saves in the win.  She now holds an impressive .800 save percentage on the season.

The Varsity Blues return to action this Saturday, September 29 when they host the undefeated Ottawa Gee-Gees at Varsity Centre. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
