Five different players scored as the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team came away with a strong 5-1 victory over the Trent Excalibur on Wednesday evening (Sept. 19) at Varsity Centre.
With their third straight win, the Blues move into a tie for second place with a 4-1-2 record, while the Trent Excalibur drop to 1-4-1, holding on to seventh in the OUA East division.
The momentum of the game was in the Blues favour for the entire match. Toronto opened the scoring in the first half when third-year striker Aisha Lewis of Mississauga, Ont., tallied her first goal of the season in the 28th minute.
The Excalibur came back to tie the game in the 35th minute, with a goal from Brittany Forester.
Although it was tied 1-1 at the half, the Blues continued to push and pulled away, scoring another four goals in the second half. Mel Bowen (West Vancouver, B.C.), LaShuanna Harper (Toronto) and Jessica Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) gave the Blues a commanding 4-1 lead, with rookie Charlotte Fisher (Vancouver) scoring in the 89th minute to put the finishing touches on a brilliant performance from the Blues.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, September 23 when they take on the Ryerson Rams at Birchmount Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
