HARPER NETS TWO AS BLUES BLANK RAMS

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team defeated the Ryerson Rams 5-0 on Sunday, October 15 at Varsity Centre.

With the win, the Blues improve to 8-3-2, while the Rams drop to 1-12-1.

First-year striker LaShaunna Harper (Toronto) scored two goals in the match.

The Blues opened the match with an early goal from Mel Bowen (West Vancouver, B.C.) off a corner kick in the 2nd minute of play. Ryerson attempted to respond but strong defence from the Blues defenders and midfielders shut the Rams out.

Toronto added three more goals in the first half, including a heads-up play by Harper, scoring on a goal that bounced off the crossbar past Rams goalkeeper Katrina Persson-Thomas (Vancouver) in the 20th minute. Harper added her second of the game in the 38th minute and Olicia Gonsalves notched her first of the season in the 44th minute.

The Blues looked to continue their offensive play in the second half, but Ryerson was able to stop multiple attempts. However, U of T eventually tallied one final goal, scored by veteran defender Diana Esteireiro (Etobicoke, Ont.) off a free kick.

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team returns to the field this Wednesday, October 17 as they travel to Peterborough, Ont., to take on the Trent Excalibur.
