Third-year defender Diana Esteireiro scored twice off of free kicks, while sophomore Lisa English added another marker as the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team shut out the Ryerson Rams 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Esteireiro opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after a free kick was awarded to the Blues (4-1-0) a few inches from the top of the box. The Etobicoke, Ont. native swung the ball past the Rams' (1-3-1) wall and past the outstretched hands of Lauren LaSalle (Barrie, Ont.) to record her first marker of the season.
The first goal turned the tide of the game, as the Rams were all over the Blues in the first half-hour of the match. Andrea Raso (Etobicoke, Ont.) found Emma Ewing-Nagy with a cross-field aerial that gave the Mississauga native a great scoring chance just inside the penalty area in the 7th minute. However, her shot found the torso of Sara Petrucci, who smothered the ball and gave up no rebound on the play.
The second half was played equally up to the last 15 minutes, with both teams getting a couple of chances. Kendra Benedict (Halifax, N.S.) nearly doubled the Blues lead in the first minutes of the half, sending a shot just wide of the right post.
After a free kick was awarded to the Blues in the 78th minute, Esteireiro cleverly took a shot while the Rams were still setting up their wall and defence, and found the mesh once again to put the Blues up 2-0. English's marker off another free kick with just minutes to go before full-time sealed the Toronto victory.
The Varsity Blues return to the field this Wednesday, September 21 as they host the Trent Excalibur at Varsity Centre. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
