Eilish McConville scored one goal and added one assist as the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team extended their win streak to three with a 2-0 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees on Sunday, September 11 at Varsity Centre.
With the win, the Blues improve to 3-1 and remain in second place in the OUA East division. McConville (Ottawa) now leads the OUA with five goals in four games played. The Lady Vees are 3-1-1 and sit in first place with a game in hand.
The Blues defensive corps of Jackie Miklovich, Nav Deol and Diane Esteireiro were relentless in shutting down Laurentian leading scorer Lisa Watson and the Lady Vees, handing them their first loss of the season.
Third-year striker Jessica Fantozzi of Richmond Hill, Ont., tallied the game-winner in the 50th minute, after McConville beat two defenders and fed her a beautiful pass with only the goalkeeper to beat.
McConville was taken down in the box in the 74th minute and stepped up for her second penalty kick of the weekend. The fifth-year striker made no mistake, beating Lady Vees goalkeeper Michelle Phillip with a booming shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Blues goalkeeper Sara Petrucci of Bolton, Ont., made nine saves in the shut out win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Sunday, September 18 when they play the Ryerson Rams at Esther Shiner Stadium.
