WOMEN’S FENCING CROWNED OUA CHAMPIONS

KINGSTON, Ont. - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues won their third title in the past four years at the 2011 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's fencing championship, February 5-6, hosted by the Royal Military College of Canada.

The Blues edged the defending champion Carleton Ravens for the overall title by a margin of 24 points. Toronto has now won six titles in the past 10 years.

Toronto’s Kelly Doyle of Troy, N.Y., who won gold in the individual sabre, was named recipient of the Dave O'Donnell trophy, awarded to the female fencer most proficient in skill, style and sportsmanship.

Teammates Julia Barette of Montreal won silver in the individual épée, and Burlington, Ont., native Kristina Han took silver in the individual sabre. Toronto also took the silver in the team foil and gold in the team sabre en route to winning the championship banner.
