Joshua McGuire won the Charles Walter Trophy as the individual foil champion to lead the Varsity Blues to a third-place finish at the 2011 OUA men’s fencing championship, February 19-20, in St. Catharines, Ont.
McGuire dominated the men’s foil event and earned the gold in the final match against Carleton’s Scott McNeil, bringing back the foil championship title and Charles Walter Trophy to U of T for the eighth time in 11 years. Kyle Chan took bronze in the foil event against Daylin Boyce from Ryerson, while Tomasz Blazejewski also ranked in the top eight.
Other noteworthy performances from Saturday include sabreurs Akash Toprani and Wiplove Lamba, who also ranked in the top eight for that event.
During the team events on Saturday, McGuire led the foil team, consisting of Kyle Chan, Tomasz Blazejewski and David Schacter, to another strong victory against Carleton for the gold medal.
