BLUES UPSET NO. 3 GAELS IN THRILLING VICTORY

In her first game back from injury, Eilish McConville scored the lone goal of the match to lead the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the CIS defending champion Queen’s Gaels on Saturday, October 8 at Varsity Centre.

With the win, the Blues improve to 7-1-3 and are in third place, while the Gaels (9-1-1) suffer their first loss of 2011 and remain on top of the OUA standings.

Playing against her former team, McConville scored what would be the game-winner in the 11th minute. The fifth-year striker headed a Diana Esteireiro corner kick into the net past Gaels goalkeeper Chantel Marson for her sixth goal of the season.

The play went back and forth for the rest of the match, as both teams had plenty of chances to score.

First-year goalkeeper Sara Petrucci was phenomenal for the Blues, turning aside six shots and denying OUA leading scorer Jackie Tessier on numerous occasions to earn her fourth shut out of the season.

The Varsity Blues return to the field tomorrow as they host the RMC Paladins at Varsity Centre.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
