BLUES WIN SECOND STRAIGHT BLACK KNIGHT TEAM TROPHY

The Varsity Bleus women’s squash team went 2-0 in winning the Black Knight women’s team trophy on Saturday, October 29 at the Athletic Centre Squash Courts.

The Blues defeated the McMaster Marauders 5-4 in semi-final action before claiming the gold medal with a 7-2 win over the Queen’s Gaels.

In the first match of the day, Ashleigh Hagen won the final match 3-2 versus McMaster’s Chantal Diniz to secure the one-point win.  The Blues won comfortably at the top of the order as rookies Pooja Chugh and Mabel Low as well as team captain Megan Northey all won 3-0.

First-year player Jessy Khalife lost 3-1 while Emily Roy went down 3-2 in a titanic struggle with Karyn Prokos, losing 15-13 in the deciding fifth and deciding game. The only win in positions five through nine went to Stefania Raimondo, who won 3-0 despite two games going to 13-11.

The Blues got off to a flying start versus Queen’s, taking an early 4-0 lead with wins by Emily Roy, Ashleigh Hagen, Jessica Omand and Mabel Low. By the time the number one players of both sides took the court, the Blues had already wrapped up the win.

This did not stop Pooja Chugh.  The rookie played an outstanding match against Queen’s Erin Roberts, one of the top players in the OUA. Chugh took Roberts by surprise, winning the first game 11-9 by showing great accuracy and length by attacking Roberts backhand.

Stunned by this loss, Roberts hit back with a series of winners to take the next two games and establish a 2-1 lead. Chugh then changed her tactics and won four points with attacking drops and boasts at the front of the court. She took the fourth game with relative ease to force a fifth game.

Roberts came out strong but Chugh re-established her backhand attack and found herself in a 7-4 lead.  Roberts then fought back to have three match points at 10-7, which Chugh desperately defended to get back to 10-10.  Chugh then served out for the match, wining 12-10.

The Blues return to the court November 18-19 when they head to New York City to take on Columbia University and NYU.
