GEE-GEES GET PAST BLUES

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in OUA quarter-final action to end their 2011 campaign on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 30).

Blues leading scorer and OUA all-star Eilish McConville got U of T on the board in the 32nd minute, beating the Ottawa goalkeeper to find the back of the net.

Toronto held a 1-0 lead at the half.

In the second half things would open up with the Gee-Gees going on the offensive. Elisabeth Wong would break away from Toronto’s defenders after taking a well-placed pass from Julia Francki (Orleans, Ont.) in the 52nd minute to tie the game at 1-1.

With under three minutes to go, and overtime looming, Toronto’s Zovel Hyre would be given a red card just on the fringe of their own goal box. With a free kick awarded well within striking distance, Gillian Baggott took the ball from Chiara Quadri (White Rock, B.C.), and scored the go-ahead goal.
