Fifth-year striker Eilish McConville scored one goal and added two assists in leading the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over the Ryerson Rams in OUA playoff action on Wednesday night (Oct. 26) at Varsity Centre.
With the win, the Blues head to Ottawa this Sunday, October 30 to take on the Gee-Gees in OUA quarter-final action.
U of T dominated throughout the first half, controlling the ball and maintaining possession for the first 45 minutes of action.
The Blues opened the scoring in the 18th minutes as McConville (Ottawa) sent a nifty through pass over a Ryerson defender to second-year striker Mel Bowen. The West Vancouver, B.C., native made no mistake, firing a shot past Ryerson goalkeeper Lauren LaSalle.
U of T held a 1-0 lead at the midway point of the game.
The Rams picked up the pace in the second half and registered a few chances to score, only to be denied by Blues rookie goalkeeper Sara Petrucci.
The Blues responded and went on the attack with a flurry of shots in the 62nd minute. Both Bowen and third-year striker Jessica Fantozzi were denied by LaSalle.
In the 66th minute, third-year Blues defender Diana Esteireiro sent a booming free kick from 30 yards out at the Ryerson net, with Rams defender Andrea Razzo coming up with a huge stop to keep the game within reach.
Second-year striker Aisha Lewis of Mississauga, Ont., silenced the Rams in the 72nd minute, receiving a pass from McConville to find the back of the net and put the home team up 2-0.
McConville added to her point tally in the 75th minute with a booming shot from 30 yards out that hit the cross bar and went in.
