BLUES GET PAST LAKERS

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team came away with a 3-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday, October 2 in North Bay, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to 6-1-3 and remain in third place in the OUA East division.

Second-year midfielder Kendra Benedict of Halifax opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the match.  Nipissing’s Katie Smolack would even the score in the 36th minute and the teams remained deadlocked at the half.

Third-year striker Jessica Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) notched the eventual game winner in the first two minutes of the second half and Vancouver native Hattie Dauman would add some insurance eight minutes later to round out the scoring.

Second-year goalkeeper Monica Maher made seven saves in the victory.

The Varsity Blues return home next Saturday, October 8 as they host the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Centre.  The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on SSN Canada via varsityblues.ca.
