BLUES CONTINUE WINNING WAYS OVER EXCALIBUR

The No. 9 Varsity Blues women’s soccer team battled some heavy rain and wind to shut out the Trent Excalibur 4-0 on Wednesday night (Oct. 19) at Varsity Centre.

With the win, the Blues improve to 10-1-3 and remain in second place in the OUA East division.  Toronto dominated the contest, outshooting the Excalibur 7-0 on the night.

Playing in her last regular season home game, fifth-year midfielder Laura Machado of Mississauga, Ont., got the Blues on the board when she headed a corner kick from Diana Esteireiro into the net in the fourth minute of action.

Toronto held that 1-0 lead at the half.

Second-year striker Aisha Lewis (Mississauga) put the Blues up by two in the 73rd minute when she received a beautiful cross from U of T’s leading scorer Eilish McConville and shot it into the empty net.

McConville then notched her ninth goal of the season with some fancy footwork around Trent goalkeeper Sarah MacGregor for a clear shot at the mesh in the 83rd minute.

Less than two minutes later, Lewis came streaking down the field and beat a rushing MacGregor to round out the scoring at four.

The Varsity Blues return to action on Saturday, October 22 as they head to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
