BLUES OVERCOME FIRST HALF DEFICIT TO BEAT RAMS

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team scored two second-half goals in defeating the Ryerson Rams 2-1 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16) at Varsity Centre.

With the win, the Blues improve to 9-1-3 and remain in the second place in the OUA East, while the Rams drop to 6-7-1 and sit in sixth.

Ryerson’s team captain Andrea Raso opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, sending a booming shot into the top right corner of Toronto’s net.

Raso was at it again in the final minutes before halftime, sneaking past the Blues defence with a chance point blank. However, Blues rookie goalkeeper Sara Petrucci of Bolton, Ont., made an excellent sliding save on the former CIS all-Canadian, keeping the Blues within one heading into the second half.

Toronto came out on fire in the second half, dominating the play for 45 minutes. It was only a matter of time before the Blues would find the equalizer. Off a corner kick in the 63rd minute, the rebound bounced to second-year striker Aisha Lewis. The Mississauga native made no mistake, leveling the contest at 1-1.

Fifth-year striker and Blues leading scorer Eilish McConville wasted no time putting the Blues up a goal just minutes later, tipping the ball past a charging Ryerson goalkeeper into the open net.

The Varsity Blues warp up their regular season home schedule this Wednesday, October 19 as they host the Trent Excalibur at Varsity Centre.  Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
