The Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team went 1-1 to open their 2010 campaign, first falling to the Queen’s Gaels 14-8 before coming away with a 12-3 victory over the McMaster Marauders this weekend (Sept. 18-19) in Hamilton, Ont.
The Blues got out to a slow start on Saturday, as Queen’s built an 8-0 lead over 15 minutes of play. 2009 OUA all-star Taryn Grieder (Cobourg, Ont.) attempted to rally the U of T squad when she scored her first of five goals at 15:55 in the first half.
Tory Wasson of Peterborough, Ont. scored two, while Breanne Gillie (Hamilton, Ont.) added one in the loss.
The Gaels were led by Lisa McLaughlin’s five goal performance.
U of T rebounded on Sunday with a dominant game over the Marauders. Gillie and Grieder each tallied two and Wasson added one to build a 5-2 lead at halftime. After McMaster scored to bring the game within two, the Blues exploded with seven unanswered goals to secure the 12-3 win.
Gillie led the way with four goals, while Grieder garnered three. Kristin Smart, Sarah Woodward, Lisa Smid and Susan Tung each had single tallies in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the field next Saturday, September 25 when they host the Queen's Gaels and UOIT Ridgebacks in their home openers at Back Campus. Game times are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
