The Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team dropped two close decisions to the Guelph Gryphons and Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, October 9 in London, Ont.
Toronto fell 15-10 to Guelph before Laurier came away with a narrow 9-7 win in the second game of the day.
The Blues got out to a 4-1 lead in the first 11 minutes of play versus the Gryphons; however, Guelph’s offence exploded and went on to score five unanswered goals to take the lead. The Gryphons went on to tally three more to build a 9-5 advantage at the half.
Blues standout Taryn Grieder of Cobourg, Ont., attempted to rally the troops with three consecutive goals in the first 15 minutes of play. Guelph continued to pressure though and answered back with six of their own to round out the 15-10 loss.
Grieder and Breanne Gillie of Hamilton, Ont., led the team with three goals apiece, while Peterborough, Ont., native Susan Tung tallied two and both Megan Daza (Orangeville, Ont.) and Tori Wasson (Peterborough, Ont.) had one in the loss.
In the second game of the day, four unanswered goals would give Laurier an early lead. Toronto battled back with goals from Gillie and Wasson to cut the gap to two at the midway point of the game.
The Golden Hawks potted the first goal of the second half but Gillie and Wasson each scored in the first five minutes to bring the game within reach. Unfortunately for Toronto, Laurier would score back-to-back goals within one minute of each other to extend the lead for good.
Gillie and Wasson led the Blues with two goals each with single markers coming from Tung, Kristin Smart, and Sarah Woodward.
The Varsity Blues finish their trip in London tomorrow when they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks at 9 a.m.
