WOMEN’S LACROSSE 1-1 ON THE ROAD

The Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team dropped a 10-8 decision to the Western Mustangs before rebounding with a big 12-5 win over the McMaster Marauders this weekend (Oct. 23-24).

Toronto came out slow in the first half versus Western and were down 4-0 at the 10-minute mark. Brianne Gillie of Hamilton, Ont., got the Blues on the board at the 10:30 mark; however, the Mustangs kept charging and built a 6-1 lead at the half.

The Blues came out blazing and two goals from Gillie, Cobourg, Ont, native Taryn Grieder and rookie Tori Wasson of Peterborough, Ont.,, as well as a single tally by Kristin Smart saw Toronto narrowing the gap to just one.

Down 8-7 with six minutes remaining, Western scored twice to take a three-goal lead that would not dwindle. Wasson scored her third of the game with one minute remaining but it was not enough for Toronto as they fell 10-8.

The Blues came back with a big win over the Marauders on Sunday afternoon. Toronto built a three-goal lead in the first 10 minutes and would not look back.

Grieder and Gillie led U of T with three goals apiece, while Wasson had two. Smart, Kelly Mollon, Lisa Smid and Susan Tung all added a goal in the win.

The Varsity Blues head to London, Ont., next weekend (Oct. 29-30) for the 2010 OUA championship hosted by Western.
