The Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team narrowly fell to the host Queen’s Gaels and Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, October 2.
Toronto dropped an 11-8 decision to the Gaels before the Golden Hawks came away with a 10-9 win in the second game of the day.
Hamilton, Ont., native Breanne Gillie and Taryn Grieder of Cobourg, Ont., each scored two goals in the first half as Queen’s built a 6-4 lead at the midway point of the game. The Gaels went on to score four unanswered goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half to put the game away for good. Despite their best efforts, the Blues could not muster a comeback.
Gillie and Grieder each had three goals, while Peterborough, Ont, native Tori Wasson had two in the loss.
Gillie again led the charge in the second game of the day, this time with Wasson. The duo scored two goals apiece in the first 25 minutes of play; however, a couple of late goals by the Golden Hawks would give them a 6-4 advantage at halftime.
Laurier scored two goals to extend their lead to four before Wasson, Grieder, Gillie and Susan Tung (Peterborough, Ont.) all potted one for Toronto to tie the game at 9-9.
Unfortunately for the Blues, Laurier’s Jen Taylor scored with 42 seconds remaining to secure the one-goal victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, October 9 when they travel to London, Ont., to take on the Guelph Gryphons and Laurier Golden Hawks. Game times are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
