WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY 2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

Megan Brown claimed back-to-back provincial and national gold medals - her third OUA and CIS individual titles in four years – to lead the Varsity Blues women’s cross country team to two team silver medals in 2009.

Brown won every event she competed in this season, first earning gold at the Western Open on Oct. 8. The Guelph, Ont. native went on to finish 34 seconds ahead of teammate and silver-medalist Erin McClure at the OUA championships in a time of 17:07 and 19 seconds ahead of Guelph’s Lindsay Carson at the national event with a time of 16:55.9.

A fifth-year veteran, McClure stepped up this senior season, earning a first-place finish at the Don Mills Open hosted by the Waterloo Warriors. She then placed second at the OUA championships and was one second shy of a podium finish at the national finale.

Similarly, Tamara Jewett, the 2008 OUA and CIS rookie of the year, had another impressive season. Jewett opened the season with a first-place individual finish at the Vic Matthews Open and after missing the conference race in St. Catharines, Ont. due to injury, she rebounded with a sixth-place individual finish at the national championships in a time of 17:30.

Brown and McClure were named OUA all-stars and CIS all-Canadians, while Jewett earned her second all-Canadian recognition in as many years.
