WOMEN’S SOCCER DOWNS GAELS 3-1

First-year striker Jessica Fantozzi scored two goals as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s soccer team defeated the Queen’s Gaels 3-1 on Sunday, September 6 at Varsity Centre.

The Blues came out flying and had numerous scoring chances in the opening minutes of the game. 2008 OUA East most valuable player Erica Basso (Richmond Hill, Ont.) sent a shot just inches wide of the net in the second minute. However, it was Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) that opened up the scoring when she sent a booming shot over the head of Queen’s goalkeeper Leny Corry (Hamilton, Ont.) for her first goal as a Varsity Blue.

The Gaels began to rally midway through the first half and tied things up when Winnipeg, Man. native Jackie Tessier pounced on a loose ball and shot it into the bottom left corner of the Blues net.

The game was tied 1-1 at the half.

Toronto came out strong again in the second half and quickly went ahead when fourth-year midfielder Mel Seabra (Brampton, Ont.) sent a beautiful lead pass to Basso who found the bottom right corner of the net.

Fantozzi added some insurance when she scored her second goal of the game in the 70th minute.

Goalkeeper Mary Anne Barnes (Scarborough, Ont.) made three saves in the victory.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Sunday, September 13 when they travel to Kingston, Ont. to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
