SEABRA LEADS WOMEN’S SOCCER TO VICTORY

Mel Seabra scored two goals as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s soccer team opened their 2009 season with a 3-0 victory over the Trent Excalibur on Saturday, September 5 at Varsity Centre.

The Blues dominated for 90 minutes, outshooting the Excalibur 18-1, but didn’t get on the board until the 32nd minute of the match when Seabra (Brampton, Ont.) deflected a shot off a Trent defender for her first goal of the game.

Toronto held a 1-0 lead at the half.

U of T continued their stellar play throughout the second half. Second-year transfer Andree Beaupre (Williamstown, Ont.) added an insurance marker in the 73rd minute and Seabra tallied her second of the game one minute later when she tapped in a pass from Jennifer Siu (London, Ont.).

Goalkeeper Mary Anne Barnes (Scarborough, Ont.) earned her first shut out of the season.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow (Sept. 6) when they host the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Centre. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
