The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s soccer team went 2-0 this past weekend, defeating the Laurentian Lady Vees and the Nipissing Lakers to remain undefeated in regular season play this season.
The Varsity Blues first game of the weekend saw them taking on the Laurentian Lady Vees on Saturday, September 26. The Lady Vees put pressure on the Blues defence within the first couple of minutes of the game, winning an early corner kick that was not converted.
Toronto opened the scoring in the 24th minute of play. A corner kick led to a scrum in front of the Lady Vees net with an eventually own goal being scored, credited to the Blues Mel Bowen (North Vancouver, B.C.)
The second half saw no goals being scored for either side, and the Blues claimed a 1-0 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees.
Both teams’ goaltenders were outstanding in the game. Meghan Hoffburn (Brampton, Ont.) turned aside ten shots for Laurentian, while Scarborough, Ont. native Mary Anne Barnes made eight saves for the shutout victory.
In their second game of the weekend, the Varsity Blues took no prisoners, scoring five times before the halftime whistle and cruised from there to a 5-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers at Education Centre Field.
