Attackers Yoko Murphy and Jennifer Held were the high scorers for the Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team as they rallied to win their third game of the weekend 14-12 against the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Varsity Centre.
Murphy (Toronto) and Held (Brampton, Ont.) each scored four points apiece, Held in particular coming through with an additional two assists, in what turned out to be a close battle to the end.
The Blues started strong right off the bat scoring two goals in the first three minutes. Toronto was in for a tough time though as the Gaels began to gain some momentum near the end of the first half, narrowing the score to 9-5.
It wasn’t until the second half that the Gaels really started to put the pressure on, tallying four consecutive goals to tie the score 9-9. The Gaels continued to apply heavy pressure, adding three more goals, one after the other, with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
However, in a fairy tale finish, the Blues fought back hard, scoring four goals in the dying minutes and holding off the Gaels final advances to secure a 14-12 victory.
The Blues return to action on October 10th when they play the McGill Marlets at McMaster University.
