The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team scored three goals in the first five minutes of play and cruised to a 19-5 win over the Guelph Gryphons in their second game on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Varsity Centre.
Second-year attack Taryn Grieder (Cobourg, Ont.) was again the high scorer for the Blues and led all players with five goals. OUA all-stars Yoko Murphy (Toronto) and Jen Held (Brampton, Ont.) as well as first-year midfield Breanne Gillie (Dundas, Ont.) each recorded a hat trick in the Blues second victory on Saturday.
Toronto jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before the Gryphons were able to get one past Blues goalkeeper Madison Ash (Mississauga, Ont.). The home squad then quickly added five more markers before the half expired to take a commanding 12-2 lead.
The Blues continued to dominate in the second half, adding seven more goals to their total and ending all hope for the visiting Gryphons.
Kristin Smart (Whitby, Ont.) score twice and Danielle Chu (Toronto) score once, accounting for the other Blues tallies.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Queen’s Gaels in what could be the biggest game of the regular season. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Varsity Centre.
