The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team came back in the second half of their match against the Ryerson Rams, to earn a 1-1 tie on Wednesday, September 16 at Lamport Stadium.
Calaigh Copland opened the scoring for the Rams in the 14th minute of play to put her squad ahead, 1-0. The Blues began to apply some pressure in the final ten minutes of the first half, earning three corner kicks, yet they could not convert and went into halftime down a goal.
Toronto continued to mount an attack early in the second half, and Erica Basso had a couple of scoring chances in point blank range only to be denied by the Rams goalkeeper Michelle Smiciklas.
Basso would not be held scoreless for long. After a Blues corner kick forced Smiciklas to make an incredible diving save, the King City native jumped on a rebound and put it away in the 70th minute to tie the game at one.
From that point on, both sides had pressure and had opportunities in the last twenty minutes of the match. Toronto, with another corner kick in the 90th minute, would again force the Rams keeper to come up big and punch the ball out of harm's way. The final whistle blew only moments afterwards, ending the game 1-1.
With the draw, the Blues are still undefeated in regular season play with two wins and two ties. They will look to continue their unbeaten streak this Saturday, September 19, playing host to the Carleton Ravens at Varsity Centre. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
