The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team finished the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record as they defeated the Guelph Gryphons 14-4 on Sunday, October 25 in Kingston, Ont.
Toronto dominated the Gryphons from start to finish. Taryn Grieder (Cobourg, Ont.) got the game going, nabbing the first two goals. The Gryphons tried their best but only managed to get one goal past Toronto’s defence before being pummelled with shots by the Blues, who raked in six more goals in the first half, gaining a solid lead.
Grieder and attacker Yoko Murphy (Toronto) were again the top scorers for the Blues; Grieder with five goals, and Murphy with four. Notably, three-time OUA all-star Jennifer Held (Brampton, Ont.) came away with one goal and five assists in the victory.
The Gryphons gained some ground in the final half scoring another three goals, but the Blues continued to strike, securing another six goals to win the game 14-4.
The Varsity Blues head to Hamilton, Ont. for the 2009 OUA championships hosted by McMaster University, scheduled to take place next weekend (Oct. 31-Nov. 1).
