WOMEN’S LACROSSE DOWNS LAURIER, WESTERN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 10-5 and the Western Mustangs 10-6 on Sunday, October 18 in Waterloo, Ont.

Jen Held led the Blues to their second consecutive victory over the defending OUA champion Golden Hawks with five goals and one assist in the morning game. The Brampton, Ont. native added a single tally against Western and is now ranked first in OUA scoring with 24 goals and 23 assists.

Held, Tory Merrill (Orangeville, Ont.) and Taryn Greider (Cobourg, Ont.) scored two goals apiece in the first half against Laurier to gain a 6-3 lead.

Held added three markers and Yoko Murphy (Toronto) had a single tally in the second half to round out the 10-5 Blues victory.

Greider led the Blues with five assists in the second game of the day. Merrill opened up the scoring three minutes into the game, while Murphy and Susan Tung (Whitby, Ont.) each scored twice. Held and Kristin Smart (Peterborough, Ont.) recorded single tallies as U of T built a comfortable 7-2 lead at the half.

The Mustangs battled back with two quick goals, however Murphy responded with two of her own to maintain Toronto’s dominant lead. Sarah Woodward recorded the Blues last goal as U of T came away with the 10-6 victory.

The Varsity Blues sit in first place of the OUA standings with a perfect 9-0-0 record.

Toronto returns to action next weekend (Oct. 24-25) when they travel to Kingston, Ont. for their final three games of the regular season. The Blues face the McGill Martlets and McMaster Marauders on Saturday, before taking on the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday.
